The university is recognized for its federal designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and is one of only six federal test sites for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the nation. Additionally, its College of Nursing and Health Sciences has been recognized by the White House on several occasions, and the Harte Research Institute leads the Texas One Gulf Center of Excellence dedicated to advancing sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf of Mexico .
